Oral Cancer Screening
Your dentist can include oral cancer screening if you are at risk of oral cancer. You may benefit from this procedure if:
- You drink alcohol heavily.
- You’re a regular tobacco consumer.
- You’ve previously been diagnosed with oral cancer.
During the screening, the dentist will be on the lookout for mouth sores and red or white patches in your mouth. These could be signs of oral cancer and early detection and treatment are key to overcoming this dreaded disease. If a sore is found, a biopsy may be needed to determine if it is cancerous. In most cases mouth sores are noncancerous, but they still need to be checked out.
